“Dialogue in Darkness”

Here in the darkness
I seek peace
Friends’ help rejected,
Drifting on my own.
Tossing and turning
In utter despair,
Writhing and wrestling
In mind’s deepest snare.
Why? I thought
Why is this happening to
“Let yourself go,
Gently float on the waves,”
Came from the darkness,
“It’s treading that saves.”
“God, O God, help me.
God, I’ve hit bottom.”
Waves, I thought,
Waves of resentment and
Waves will inundate
And drown me in tears.
Yes, waves of fear engulf
even the best;
Soaring on waves of pure
You’ll find the rest:
Love mixed with thanks to
your God,
For your life
Rides the billows
And calms the strife.
Back in the daylight
I found peace
Whence it came? How?
It was not my own.
Tempestuous waves again
may roll,
But I’ll float on the crest of
Above the dark waves of
my soul.

-Margaret Massie

Don't Quit

Don't quit when
the tide is lowest,
For it's just about
to turn;
Don't quit over doubts
and questions,
For there's something
you may learn.
Don't quit when
the night is darkest,
For it's just a while
'til dawn;
Don't quit when you've
run the farthest,
For the race is almost won.
Don't quit when
the hill is steepest,
For your goal
is almost nigh;
Don't quit, for you're
not a failure
Until you fail to try.

Love is
being happy for the other person
when that person is happy
being sad for the other person
when that person is sad
being together in good times
and being together in bad times

Love is
the source of strength

Love is
being honest with yourself at all times
being honest with the other person at all times
telling, listening, respecting the truth
and never pretending

Love is
the source of reality

Love is
an understanding so complete that
you feel as if you are a part of the other person
accepting that person just the way he or she is
and not trying to change each other to be something else

Love is
the source of life.

The Fight

The heart wants to love
yet we hate
The heart wants to understand
yet we are confused
The heart wants equality
yet we try to dominate one another
The heart wants peace
yet we fight
The heart wants to give
yet we are greedy
The heart wants to help
yet we destroy
The heart wants to care
yet we are insensitive
If only the heart
were a little stronger.

"If we had no winter the spring would not be pleasant; if we did not sometimes taste adversity, prosperity would not be so welcome."

Anne Bradstreet

"Optimism is the faith that leads to achievement. Nothing can be done without hope and confidence."

Helen Keller

"The longer I live, the more I realize
the impact of attitude on my life.
Attitude to me, is more important than facts.
It is more important than the past, than education, than money,
than circumstances, than failures than
successes, than what people think or
say or do. It is more important than
appearance, giftedness or skill. It will
make or break a company . a church . a home.
The remarkable thing is we have a
choice everyday for that day. We
cannot change our past . we cannot
change the fact that people will act in a
certain way. We cannot change the
inevitable. The only thing we can do is play on
the string we have and that is
our attitude . I am convinced that life is
10% what happens to me and 90% how I react to it.
And so it is with you . we
are in charge of our attitudes."

Letter received by Rosa Battle:

Dear Rosa,

Thank you for coming to Michael's service. He always looked forward to what you had to say at the Friends for Hope meetings and we would talk about it afterwards. You helped him keep the attitude that he was handing his life over to God and trusting in him. I bet you had no idea what a positive influence you had on our lives. You were absolutely his favorite person to see and the most helpful at Friends for Hope. You are truly an angel on earth. Michael was very impressed with you and admired you greatly. (ME TOO!)

Love, Karen Peam
